Battle of the Booze - Alannah Myles vs Robin Lee
I’m putting this post together early so that I can concentrate on healing from chemotherapy. Technically, it’s August 27 - but this here battle is for October 1.
This battle is a do-over battle. The last time these two ladies battled it out, it was a very very close call. But…. being this month is Rocktober, I wanted to present a battle that went with the genre.
So… the less than 60 second story of the song:
The song was co-written by Alannah Myles’ boyfriend. Alannah Myles did the original demo. The song was then taken to Atlantic Records in hopes of getting Myles signed to the label. They were successful in doing so.
BUT (there’s always a but, right?) Atlantic Records also gave the song to Robin Lee to record.
Alannah Myles recording was released December 1989, and Robin Lee released hers February 1990. Myles was promoted on pop and rock charts while Lee was promoted on the country chart.

If you’re a blogger and want to join in the fun, please do so! There’s plenty of content for everyone to join in.
In the event that you are new here, or you have simply forgotten… Here’s a review of how a battle works:
Listen to each of the contenders. Try not to be persuaded by the videos. I like to close my eyes and let the music transport me. Keep an open mind and don’t be persuaded by the artist name.
Pick the contender that you prefer the most
Leave a comment with the name of the contender you have chosen. Feel free to expound upon your choice.
Visit the other bloggers that have battles taking place. Their battles are different from each other, so be sure to check them out.
Alright now… Cast your votes in the comments! Voting Results will be posted on the 8th of this month.

ReplyDeleteI hope things are still going well for you at the assisted living facility.
This is kind of tough because I like both versions. The first one is more Bluesy and a bit more torchy. Which is a goot thang. But the second one is also quite good, and I find it much easier to hear the lyrics. Which is also a goot thang.
I think ROBIN LEE is probably a technically better singer, so I'll cast my "bote" for her.
I was never a Black Velvet drinker (I like the song better'n the whiskey), but in the early '80s I had a Black Velvet advertisement printed on a big square tin that hung in my bedroom. It was really created as a bar or liquor store ad. I probably found it in some thrift store and bought it so I'd have some hot blonde to keep me company year 'round.

I think one is almost as good as the other, maybe not better by miles, but my preference is Myles. I like her voice and the production a tad bit better.

Alannah is Canadian and her original gets played frequently here. This is the first time I heard a cover of it. While it was pretty good, I have to stick with my home girl. ☺
ReplyDeleteVOTE = ROBIN LEE
ReplyDeleteI find Robin's vocals much stronger and easy to listen to and sing along with. ~Ed.
I liked Robin's voice better. She gets my vote.
ReplyDeleteThe Alannah version gets played here a lot so I'm very familiar with her version but I like Robyn more. It has a bit more blues to it and her voice is stronger so she gets my vote.
ReplyDeleteThese two are about as close as they can be without being one! I do think there was some technical technique-ery going on ;-) My vote goes to Robin Lee. Good song choice, by the way ;-) Feel better every day!
