Call Me Battle: ELO Vs Kraftwerk

Hello?

Hi! It’s Me!  Just calling to let you know that it’s time for another round of the Call Me Battle of the Bands.

Last month’s battle was a pretty good one!  I’m hoping this month will prove to be just as exciting. One never really knows until the last minute, and I do appreciate all of you that take the time to cast a vote.  I’ve been revamping my list of tunes, and am thinking that within the next couple of months we will begin the playoffs for this theme.  I’m open to more ideas for when we complete this series, if’n ya have ‘em.

I think today’s battle consists of tunes that are somewhat similar.   Give them both a listen and let me know which one you like the best.

First up on the stage is….

ELO

That was a fun song, wasn’t it? Well, don’t get too comfy because another great song is taking them on and fighting for a spot in the playoffs.

Our second contender on the stage is….

Kraftwerk

Who will make it to the playoffs? Cast your votes in the comments below. If you find yourself unable to leave a comment, please visit Jingle Jangle Jungle’s facebook page to leave a comment on the post that correlates with this battle.

In the event that you are new here, or you have simply forgotten… Here’s a review of how a battle works:

  1. Listen to each of the contenders. Try not to be persuaded by the videos. I like to close my eyes and let the music transport me. Keep an open mind and don’t be persuaded by the artist name.

  2. Pick the contender that you prefer the most

  3. Leave a comment with the name of the contender you have chosen. Feel free to expound upon your choice.

  4. Visit the other bloggers that have battles taking place. Their battles are different from each other, so be sure to check them out.

    1. Stephen McCarthy

    2. Tossing It Out

    3. The Sound of One Hand Typing

    4. Curious As A Cathy

    5. dIEDRE

    6. Debbie DogLady

    7. Boromax aka Ed

    8. Mike’s Ramblings

Are you a blogger and want to join in the fun with your own music battles on the 1st and 15th of each month (or only one battle a month) - reach out to Mr McCarthy to get yourself added to the list!

Alright now… Cast your votes in the comments! Voting Results will be posted on the 22nd of this month.

  1. HELLOooooooo? HELLOooooooo?
(Not to be confused with AAOOOOoooo!)

MMQE, are you there? Is you going to pick up the phone and say...
    HELLOooooooo?!

Funny thing is that I didn't really care for the Electric Light Orchestra when they were big in the '70s. I thought they were OK, but sounded too much like The Beatles, and none of their songs really resonated with me. [Fun Fact: I used to know the guy who appeared on the cover of ELO's 1979 'Discovery' album.]

In 2018, I rediscovered a cassette tape I had made 33 years earlier. It contained songs and DJ yakking I'd recorded from the radio on Sept. 21, 1985. I won't drone on and on and bore you to death with the details, but that tape resulted in me having quite a powerful Spiritual experience. And the cornerstone of that experience was the ELO song 'Telephone Line'. Ever since then, I've really loved it in a uniquely personal way.

So, there is simply no way I could vote against ELO in this Battle.

Judge Al Bondigas was listening this time, too. He asked me four questions:

    1) "Have you ever heard of Kraftwerk before?"
    A: "Yes".

    2) "Tell me again, what's that style of music called?"
    A: "New Wave".

    3) "Do you like it?"
    A: "No".

    Judge Al: "Yeah, me neither".
STMcC: "Does that mean you are rulin' for ELO?"
Judge Al: "Yeah. Rulin' for ELO".

    4) "Has Mary ever used that Jim Croce song in her Call Me battles? You know the one -- Operator, could you help me place this call? See, the number on the matchbook is old and faded".
    A: "No, I don't think so".

Judge Al Bondigas: "Well, then, tell her the Judge has said she needs to use it or... she'll do time".

    That's it, Mary! That's the Judge's rulin'.

  3. VOTE = KRAFTWERK

Amazingly, for what it's worth, for better or worse, and all that jazz, I enjoyed the New Wave style and arrangement of Kraftwerk's piece more than the progressive style of ELO's. That is all. ~Ed.

  4. Hi, Mary! I hadn't heard Kraftwerk before. My sister would sure love that pianophone ;-) I'm voting for ELO, melancholy lyrics notwithstanding. That song was the first time I ever heard a radio DJ cuss on air; the song had just ended and she goes : "Gah! If she'd just pick up the damned telephone!" I thought to myself "Exactly." ;-)
