Everything I Own: a 3 way Battle!

It’s been a minute or two since my last battle. Nevertheless, I am here with another battle.  I stumbled on this little gem while doing research for my AtoZ posts.

The Song being battled today is: Everything I Own

Back in 1972, David Gates wrote this song and performed it with his band, Bread. The song reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was a tribute to his father who passed in 1963, before Gates had any success with his band.

In 1974, Ken Boothe, a Jamaican musician, covered the song putting his own personal touch on the tune. His version reached #1 in the UK Singles Chart.

But wait… there’s More!

In 1987, Boy George, lead singer for the band Culture Club, decided to go solo. This song was his first solo hit. It reached #1 in the UK, Canada, Ireland and Norway charts. It would also be his ONLY UK #1 song as a solo artist.

Typically, I don’t like using original artists as one of the contenders. But since each did very well in the charts, let’s see how they stack up against one another in 2021.

Our first contender is: Bread

Second Contender: Ken Boothe

Third Contender: Boy George

In the event that you are new here, or you have simply forgotten… Here’s a review of how a battle works:

  1. Listen to each of the contenders. Try not to be persuaded by the videos. I like to close my eyes and let the music transport me.

  2. Pick the contender that you prefer the most

  3. Leave a comment with the name of the contender you have chosen. Feel free to expound upon your choice.

  4. Visit the other bloggers that have battles taking place. Their battles are different from each other, so be sure to check them each out.  *I think this is a recent list, if not, Cathay keeps a current list on her battle posts.

    2. Tossing It Out

    3. Mike’s Ramblings

    4. The Sound of One Hand Typing

    5. Curious As A Cathy

    6. Storms & Stardust

Alright now… Cast your votes in the comments!

Voting results will be posted on May 8!

  1. Bread gets my vote, but Boy George is probably the best cover

  2. I give it to Bread which I think is the best but a good second is Boy George

  3. The song with it's current ballad pace is a rock ballad. The covers didn't do much but add a reggae beat. Maybe a fast metal cover? Metallica? Foo Fighters?
Bread wins my vote hands down.

  4. Bread gets my vote too; this happens to be my favorite tune by Bread! But Boy George's version was very well-done, and he made it his own. Really enjoyed his version.

  5. Welcome back to BOTB, MMQE! ~

Going just by the title, I didn't think I knew this song, but pretty quickly after the Bread original started playing, I thought: Oh, sure, Old Man, you know this song. It's from a lifetime ago.

It's a lovely song -- which is something one could say about so many Bread songs!

And although it's unusual, I'm "in with the In-Crowd" this time. Gotta BOTB Bote for BREAD. And you can bet plenty of bread that Bread will win this Battle going away. (But I'll admit that Girl George was better'n I expected.)

  6. So good to see you back on the musical battlefield. Nice song to put in the arena.

Ken and Boy both did a fine job with this, but as far as I'm concerned Bread owns this song. I love the tender sentiment they give it.

    A vote for Bread.

  7. Ken Boothe for me because of the relaxing licks and the measures.

It is also very sing-able especially with the chorus.

"Give up my life; my heart; my home".

[probably not a great song for those who are cosmopolitan or rootless!]

And for those people who enjoy Eighties comebacks and nostalgia - George will get in there.

    Still stand for Ken.

  8. Mary,

I've always been a fan of the original but in all fairness I listened to the cover artists with an open mind. I preferred Boy George over Ken Boothe but in the end I still felt BREAD is the best. Interesting battle. Thanks for visiting over the weekend to vote in We Have All The Time In The World BoTB Showdown.
