#SundaySounds: Count Your Blessings
God truly gives us so many blessings each and every single day. Some may even be so small that we might overlook them. The classic hymn 'Count Your Blessings' truly reminds us to stop and give thanks for all God has done in our lives. This is definitely a pause we all need to take.
When it seemed that my entire world was turning upside down this year, this song has kept me going through the tough times. The medical staff has mentioned to me several times that I was unusually happy during such stressful and serious illness. I made it my personal goal to not look at the negative side of this illness and focus on the fact that I am upright, and definitely above ground. I have not gone a full 2 weeks this year without something medical going on with me. There have been more than a few times that I’ve had multiple issues taking place at the same time. I just smile and take it in stride. The Lord has blessed me with a decent life, and especially as of late, has placed me in the company of those who lift me up.
Today’s song was written by a man that did not have a natural singing ability, but he did have a gift for writing songs. After studying ministry and serving in Methodist Churches, he wrote over 5,000 songs.
“Count Your Blessings”
Lyrics by Johnson Oatman Jr., 1856–1922
Music by Edwin O. Excell, 1851–1921
When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Refrain:
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God hath done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.
Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, ev'ry doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by. (Refrain)
When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings, money cannot buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high. (Refrain)
So, amid the conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey's end. (Refrain)
I am always open to suggestions for songs to be used, as well as other suggestions you might have for the blog. If you would rather not share that info in the comments, you may email your suggestions.
Mary, I'm sorry you're having to go through so much with your health. I loved your story about how the medical staff has commented on how happy and positive you've been in spite of your trials. You are truly an inspiration to me. Your blog is one of the funnest, and often inspirational, things I get to read nowadays. Thank you so much! As usual, you rock, Mary! I treasure our friendship. Love you!
