#BOTB: Robert Burns Battle
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne.
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne.
I’m sure that many of us have mumbled or hummed our way through this song at some point in in our lives, but have you really taken the time to think about the lyrics?
The original, as written by Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1788:
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne.
Chorus
For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne.
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
Chorus
We twa hae run about the braes
And pu'd the gowans fine
But we've wander'd mony a weary foot
Sin auld lang syne.
Chorus
We twa hae paidl'd i' the burn
Frae mornin' sun till dine.
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin auld lang syne.
Chorus
And there's a hand, my trusty fiere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right guid willy waught,
For auld lang syne.
Chorus
And the English translation:
Should old acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And long, long ago.
Chorus
And for long, long ago, my dear
For long, long ago.
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
For long, long ago.
And surely you'll buy your pint-jug!
And surely I'll buy mine!
And we'll take a cup of kindness yet
For long, long ago.
Chorus
We two have run about the hills
And pulled the daisies fine;
But we've wandered manys the weary foot
Since long, long ago.
Chorus
We two have paddled in the stream,
From morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
Since long, long ago.
Chorus
And there's a hand, my trusty friend!
And give us a hand of yours!
And we'll take a deep draught of good-will
For long, long ago.
Chorus
As you may have already guessed, I’ve chosen this song for today’s battle. I was really surprised that it had only been battled twice before - Kim battled it in January 2016 and StMac did a Christmas version in December 2016.
Once again, I’ve got male vs female taking place… and each version is acapella (or as I used to say as a young girl - acapulco style) I believe each brings something a little different to the table, so you’ll want to be sure to listen to each in their entirety before making your decision.
As a reminder for you seasoned readers and to help out those of you who may be new here
Here is how a battle works:
Step One - Listen to each of the contenders. TRY not to be persuaded by the videos
Step Two - Pick the contender that you prefer the most (not just the one with the name you are familiar with) Pick ONLY from the contenders provided in THIS battle.
Step Three - Comment with your selection. The comment section has been set up so that anyone can leave a comment. I do ask that you please include your name, should you use the anonymous feature.
Step Four - Visit Stephen’s blog to check out his battle and for a list of other bloggers that have battles going on. We each have different battles, so please be sure to visit everyone. I'll provide a link below the videos to Stephen's blog for your convenience.
Now that we’ve got the formalities out of the way, let’s get to it!
Contender #1 - Neoni
Neoni (pronounced Neon ee) is a sister duo from Colorado - don’t worry, I hadn’t heard of them until this battle, either.
Contender #2 - Home Free
Home Free is an American a cappella group of five male vocalists, their home state being Minnesota
Now, to repeat myself:
YOU DON’T NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH AN ARTIST OR A SONG TO KNOW WHICH ONE YOU PREFER. You only need to listen to the videos and choose which one sounds better to you. There are no right or wrong votes, unless you vote for someone not listed as a contender or don’t vote at all.
For those of you who may be interested in joining in our fun - The battles take place twice a month. Once on the 1st, and again on the 15th. Some participants have chosen to participate only once a month - and that’s okay - we’re just happy to have you join us! Your battle can consist of covers of the same song, different songs with the same title, or even a themed type battle. We just want you to join in the fun! Catch the link to Stephen’s blog to join in - all you need to do is drop him a comment on his blog stating you’d like to participate and he’ll add you to the roster of participants.
I’d like to encourage you to visit the other bloggers participating in the battle of the bands blog hop as well. We’ve all put a lot of time and effort into putting together these battles and they are a lot of fun. Each blogger has a different battle taking place. You can find a current list of participants on Stephen’s blog (don't forget you can also request to join the battle of the bands blog hop by simply commenting on his blog that you'd like to join us).
Alright now… Cast your votes for either Neoni or Home Free!
Voting will end on Tuesday, January 6 with results being posted on Wednesday, January 7.

ReplyDeleteI didn't realize that this famous song was written by a guy whose restaurant I'd eaten in a couple of times:

Great January 1st BOTB idea!
I very, very sincerely hope you escape this Battle without a shutout, but I'm-a gonna cast the first vote for HOME FREE.
Mary, I very, Very, VERY hope you have a GREAT New Year (2020), and I also hope that John or Mike or Birgit will come along . . . before long . . . and save you from a potential shutout! (As that's NO WAY to start a New Year!)
Best O' Luck, M'Dear!!

STMcC Presents BATTLE OF THE BANDS
Ok...I really liked Naomi’s video. The two women harmonize well. And as a bonus, the story they tell in the video fit the music.
ReplyDeleteBut I have to admit I’m partial to five part a capella, especially male voices. Home Free had me from the very first note. My vote goes to Home Free.
Easy one for me. The girls are good, but they kind of got on my nerves. Not that I liked Home Free much better, but I did prefer their version.
ReplyDeleteGive my vote to Home Free.
I guess I'm just not particularly enthralled with this song. Too many years of hearing it maybe. My wife loves it. She was so disappointed last night when she was watching one of the New Year's shows and they didn't sing "Auld Lang Syne" but instead did some more modern number. Yeah, that's not right.

Tossing It Out
Neither are my favourite but I will go with Neoni who had a more pleasant voice for my ears. The boys were irritating. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Years the girls get my vote
ReplyDeleteMary,
ReplyDeleteWell...it looks like you don't have to worry about having a shut-out like Stephen feared. I appreciate the harmonizing vocals of both contenders but I preferred HOME FREE to the girls. Here's to your good health, happiness, prosperity, and generally all things wonderful to find you in 2020, my dear! xx
Marry, Happy New Years to you! My vote goes to Neoni. Love their rendition.
ReplyDeleteFun fact: "Auld Lang Syne" is used commonly here in Japan. If you hear it played at a store or public building, it means that it's closing time.

Home Free was a little too Pentatonix for me. Neoni weren't as polished, but I liked the approach they took. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Mary! Hope I'm still in time to cast a vote. I've been on hiatus for a couple of weeks and am just now catching up. My vote goes to Home Free. I liked their fuller sound a bit more, although Neoni did a good job, as well. Cheers!
