#SongLyricSunday : Cry To Me

Time again for Song Lyric Sunday!

The Idea was formed by Helen @ This Thing Called Life One Word At A Time.  Helen has been ill for quite some time, so Jim has stepped up as Guest Host for this fun weekly post.

This week our word prompt is “Crying/Sadness”. Thank you Jim, for posting the themes for the month, as it seems my schedule is just crazy busy lately.

Last week we posted about Laughing. Helen seemed to have a fondness for opposites, so that is why I suggested the topic today.  Crying is equally as important as laughing.  One must experience the sadness, to appreciate the joy - at least that's what I've been told all my life.

Crying also one of nature's way of cleansing the soul. I don't like to cry. My eyes get all puffy and red, and it heightens the dark circles under my eyes.  Lord knows I've done my share of shedding tears, though, so I must be pretty healthy, right?

The song that I have chosen has been around for quite some time. ‘Cry To Me’ was written by Bert Russell aka Bert Berns. It was first recorded in 1961 by Solomon Burke. Since that time, it has been covered several times.

Today I thought I would share with you the original by Solomon Burke and a few of the covers, just to hear the differences.

The Lyrics:

The original:

Marc Broussard acoustic

Marc Broussard non-acoustic

Tom Petty

Rolling Stones

I think my favorite of all of the covers is the Marc Broussard acoustic version.  Do you have a favorite?

Thank you again, Jim,  for stepping in as guest host today!

  1. Mary, I listened to each one. You'd think one would stand out over the others, but to me each has their own charm. It's a heartrending song and they all do it up right for me. Excellent choice for the prompt!

    1. Thanks, Jade!

I almost considered holding on to the song for use in a Battle of the Bands post, but the song has been on my mind all week, so I just ran with it.

  4. The original will always be nostalgic for me, a Dirty Dancing fan. But there is a raw quality to Marc’s acoustic recording that keeps me coming back!
