#4M : 1956 Elvis and Friends

Today’s theme for #MondaysMusicMovesMe or #4M has been chosen by “The Shadow”.  They will be the ‘music conductor’ for the month of January.  Today’s assignment is Elvis Presley, as his birthday is January 8.  In addition, we have been instructed to pick an additional song from the Elvis Presley era.  That’s where it gets a bit interesting, as Elvis was around from the mid 1950’s until late 1970’s.

Elvis started recording in 1953, but didn’t really hit it big until January 1956, when he made his first recordings with RCA in Nashville.   The first hit that came out of that recording session was ‘Heartbreak Hotel’.  Later that month, he appeared on television for the first time, and did more recording sessions.  By the end of the year, he had 5 songs that fell in the Top 20 songs for the year.

Because this was quite the successful year for Elvis, I’ve decided to focus on 1956 for this post.

I’ve got the 5 songs, plus 5 additional from that same year, that also fell in the Top 20 songs of the year.

  • #1 - Elvis Presley - Heartbreak Hotel
  • #2 - Elvis Presley - Don’t Be Cruel
  • #3 - Nelson Riddle - Lisbon Antiqua
  • #4 - Platters - My Prayer
  • #8 - Elvis Presley - Hound Dog
  • #10 - Kay Starr - Rock and Roll Waltz
  • #12 - Platters - The Great Pretender
  • #14 - Elvis Presley - I Want You, I Need You, I Love You
  • #15 - Elvis Presley - Love Me Tender
  • #16 - Perry Como - Hot Diggity

Enjoy!  Do you have a favorite Elvis song? Or a song from his era?

Don’t forget to stop by tomorrow (Jan 8) for the Battle of the Bands Results

  1. Mary,

Fabulous 50s collection! You shared some of Elvis' most popular tracks. It's hard for me to say which is my favorite but of the ones you listed I might have to say it's either "Heartbreak Hotel", "Hound Dog", or "Love Me Tender". I'm undecided. The Platters are a fav oldies group. I love the performers style from that era from the way the dressed to the way they moved on stage. Great, fun selection!

  3. Our favorite Elvis song is "Jailhouse Rock." "heartbreak Hotel and "Hound Dog" are right up there. Judging by your playlist, he was head and shoulders above everyone else.

I will say the song "My Prayer" by the Platters was one of my Dad's favorite songs & a few tears came to this old girl's eyes I'll tell ya! I haven't heard that song in years. Thank you very much. Love all your tunes & pickins! Big hugs & thank you girlfriend!
