Dog v Cat Round One Tournament Results

Can you believe it’s Monday already? Where does the time go?

I was going to start a new series here - a series that has been sitting in my my ‘To Do’ documents for the past 2 years.  Unfortunately, it still needs a bit of fine tuning, and it’s not ready to roll. So it goes on the back burner until I can find the time to get it to the quality that I want it to be before posting.

Today, I am revealing the results of Round One of The Ultimate Dog v Cat Battle of the Bands Tournament.  You might recall that I am collaborating with our friend Michele from Angels Bark for this tournament.

There were a few comments made that suggested you weren’t familiar with Pantera.  I’m a little surprised that no one said that about Nitro.  Nitro is the band that I wasn't familiar with.

So before revealing the results of Round One, I thought I would share a few more tunes from both of the bands.

Nitro
Nitro is an American heavy metal band from Hollywood, California. Formed in 1988, the group originally featured vocalist Jim Gillette, guitarist Michael Angelo Batio, bassist T. J. Racer and drummer Bobby Rock. Nitro released its debut album O.F.R. in 1989, which reached number 140 on the US Billboard 200. Rock was replaced by K. C. Comet for the album's promotional tour. Nitro II: H.W.D.W.S., released in 1992, featured Ralph Carter on bass and Johnny Thunder on drums.

The group broke up in 1993, with a number of previously unreleased demo recordings issued in 1999 on the M.A.C.E. Music compilation Gunnin' for Glory. In late 2016, it was announced that Gillette and Batio were set to reform the band, with Lamb of God drummer Chris Adler added to the group's lineup. Alongside bassist Victor Wooten and producer Kane Churko, Nitro is currently recording material for its upcoming third studio album, and has toured with Matt DeVries on bass.

Pantera
Pantera was an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas. The group was formed in 1981 by the Abbott brothers – drummer Vinnie Paul and guitarist Dimebag Darrell – along with lead vocalist Terry Glaze. Bassist Rex Brown joined the band the following year, replacing Tommy D. Bradford, who was the unofficial original. Having started as a glam metal band, Pantera released four albums during the 1980s. Looking for a new and heavier sound, Pantera replaced Glaze with Phil Anselmo in late 1986 and released Power Metal in 1988. With its fifth album, 1990's Cowboys from Hell, Pantera introduced a groove metal sound. Pantera's sixth album, 1992's Vulgar Display of Power, exhibited an even heavier sound. Far Beyond Driven (1994) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.

Tensions began to surface among the band members when Anselmo became addicted to heroin in 1995; he almost died from an overdose in 1996. These tensions resulted in the recording sessions for The Great Southern Trendkill (1996) being held separately. The ongoing tension lasted for another seven years, during which only one studio album, Reinventing the Steel (2000), was recorded. Pantera went on hiatus in 2001 but was disbanded by the Abbott brothers in 2003 amid communication problems and their conclusion that Anselmo would not return to the band.

The Abbott brothers went on to form Damageplan, while Anselmo continued work on several side projects, including Down, which Rex Brown joined as well. On December 8, 2004, Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage by a mentally unstable fan during a Damageplan concert in Columbus, Ohio. Vinnie Paul died in 2018, permanently ending hopes for a reunion, and leaving Glaze as the only surviving member of the band's first line-up.

And now…. Drum roll please…..

The results for Round One:  Catscratch Fever (Nitro) v Catscratch Fever (Pantera)

Nitro with 6 votes

And 2 non-votes (seriously? Was it THAT difficult to have an opinion?)

  1. We both had close outcomes in our Battles. I probably had a few more non-votes than you, but I've come to expect those from certain visitors. I'm thankful that they at least comment although I'd rather they vote too.

I probably wouldn't mind the non-votes so much if their comments were relevant to the post - other than 'what a fun concept'

I'm looking forward to Round Two of this tournament, and on to the next. We'll see who wins - Dog or Cat.

  4. I have no clue what's goin' on with this, so I'll just slide on that & say as far as for Hard Rock or Acid Rock I just don't get too much of that anyway. Some ma do & Some-ma don't I guess I'm part of the don't. I'm an old fashion kinda girl. Sorry... but it sure looks like y'all are havin' fun & that's the real point! Big hugs...

    How come that?

MMQE, as a dead Democrat buried in a Chicago cemetery, I am entitled to at least two more votes, and I'm casting them for the girls of Nitro. So, you need to change your results post.
    ;o)

Fine. Don't change it. Looking on the bright side: Pantera being the winner and advancing to the next round, it just means I'll get the pleasure of voting against them for a second time.

Will the next round feature the song 'CAT-SCRATCHED BEEMER' by The Unruly Kittehs? (I love that band! What's not to love? Four gorgeous felines, high on catnip, and wearing bikinis onstage!)

Because I'm da boss! And... it's just easier to maintain everything from one place. (plus traffic. Duh.)

      >>.. the girls of Nitro

LOL Some of those earlier pics of Jim Gillette had me looking twice, as it looks like he's got quite the rack on him.

BUT... I did watch This 2:17 is a visual I'm trying to wash from my brain. I also watched a more recent video, and Jim's voice didn't seem to hold out for those notes he used to hit.

But That Michael Angelo Batio - did you know he designed his own guitars? They are wild looking - the 4 neck was stolen, though. Bummer.

The Only Unruly Kitteh I am familiar with is This One

Speaking of Unruly Kittens.. Remember Little Cindy Lou Who from Whoville? (yes, the one from The Grinch) Guess what she's been up to lately? She's the Lead Singer of this group.

I couldn't find The Unruly Kittehs or Cat-Scratched Beemer on YouTube. Bummer.

    2. You can't fool me, MARY. I know that NITRO is really just SPINAL TAP using a different name. (Of course, I could say the same thing about 666 other bands like that, too.)

      >>... The Only Unruly Kitteh I am familiar with is This One

I think I dated her... ONCE.

      >>... Remember Little Cindy Lou Who from Whoville?

      Little Cindy Lou Who?
      Why I remember her
When she was no more than two!

(*Actually, I never saw that movie. I don't do "reboots". But I DO own the original animated classic and watch it every Christmastime.)

      >>... I couldn't find The Unruly Kittehs or Cat-Scratched Beemer on YouTube. Bummer.

That's probably because they exist only in my mind. (Or what's left of it, anyway.) 'CAT-SCRATCHED BEEMER' -- I think Weird Al missed a good opportunity there.

Have you heard the song 'WANG DANG SWEET MOONSHINE' by Ned Tugent?

Nope. But I just listed to 'WANG DANG SWEET POONTANG' by Ted Nugent

I agree, Weird Al missed a good opportunity with 'Cat Scratched Beemer'

Half-way through the week. How shall I break my page to annoy you? HA!

  6. Mary,

Ahhh, I found your 4M post and BoTB results! It's just been one of those mornings, what can I say? Anywho, I listened to part of your playlist. To be honest with you and you probably already know this since we've been doing this for awhile together but its a bit too heavy for my ears. I tried to listen for as long as I could while working in the kitchen this morning preparing DH's birthday dinner. HOLD ON TO YOUR SHIRT...I just realized I was playing your Pantera playlist. *smack forehead* Okay, let me the Nitro playlist a shot. I much preferred your first playlist and I especially like "Love Strikes Back". Judging by the two playlists then it's easy for me to see why I went with Nitro in your last BoTB. Your battle was certainly a close one. As for non-voters I get those 'em, too. I'm just grateful that my friends at least make an effort to let me know they stopped by for a visit. :) Have a bandtastic week!

    1. Glad you found it! I try to use a direct link in the linky. It usually makes it better for us all. I tried commenting on your other comment, and got an error, but it did finally go through. Somehow I had managed to sign myself out on part of googles services. And now, I see I responded to Stephen as a separate comment. (I better fix that!) Yup, it's one of those days.

  7. Hey Tourny Partner!
How fun is this? You did have a close one! I voted for Nitro so I went with the loser in your battle and the loser in mine! Lol. Big L on my forehead!

That was cool that you provided three songs each for both your battle contenders as I wasn't familiar at all with Nitro and never really got into Pantera (no surprise there, right?). I liked the more mellow songs from each (Nitro's Love Strikes Back and Pantera's Hallow --at least in the beginning). I don't like the screaming-type vocals in Pantera and so many of the bands of that era.

Hey, those non-voters still irritate me for you. When you respond to these folks, has anyone ever come back and voted?? Just curious.

Okay, my dogs are pacing and have their legs crossed so I'm assuming it's time for a potty break and they're not just begging me for treats... Gotta run! :)

    1. Hey There Michele!

      >>... When you respond to these folks, has anyone ever come back and voted?? Just curious.

Only once did I have someone come back to vote. I did have one that all bent at my sarcastic response to their comment. I think they were mostly pissed that I called them out in a public group on Facebook for not following group rules which state: All comments must be RELEVANT to the blog post and a minimum of 15 words, 2 sentences. They did come back and responded as 'anonymous' (COWARD!) saying they were embarrassed to be a associated as a collegue. I just laughed it off and said I'd be embarrassed too if I were them and called myself a blogger - as they obviously aren't capable of reading a post and making a simple 2 sentence comment. They ended up leaving the group saying we were a rude unwelcoming bunch. Yeah, I'm a bitch sometimes. What can I say? When I first started blogging, and shortly after my cancer diagnosis, I had one person try to tell me that I brought it on myself. They were very lucky not to be in the same room as me, as they may have been punched in the throat.

I predict my Round 2 will be a blow-out. But I'm not worried about it. I still have fun no matter what.

Be sure to check out my book review post that is going live on Friday. You're gonna have a good laugh.

      Chat with ya later

  8. Very interesting battle rounds. You are very creative.

  9. So, as far as your current battle. I had not heard of Nitro (I listen to some heavy metal, but it is not my predominant genre). My husband, who does like metal, had heard of Nitro (although he didn't know much about them.) I liked the instrument playing of Pantera better but...as some of us have favorite and non-favorite styles, I have to admit that (for me) the type of growl/scream (there must be a technical term but I don't know it) that some heavy metal vocalists use is like nails on a blackboard to me. Two of the Pantera songs employed that style. So, my vote goes for Nitro.
