More Colors... Plus Battle Results! And some questions...

I love a good challenge, don't you?

My brain is feeling a bit numb, so now I’m feeling a bit challenged about what I want today’s post to be. In honor of last week’s theme “Songs with Colors in the Title” I posted a little game on my personal Facebook page challenging people to name  a song with a color in the title.

I had thought about using a few of these songs for a post today, but you know me... I love to be ‘Just a little bit different’. It’s what makes me unique.  During this game I was playing on Facebook, I had a brainstorm. Today’s post was born out of this brainstorm.

“Bands with Colors in their Name”

I started to put together a list of bands or artists with colors in their name. I was surprised at how many I was able to dig up!  Holy smokes there are really quite a few.  Rather than do a very large list, I’m just going to limit my list to 10.

  • Pink Floyd
  • Black Sabbath
  • Deep Purple
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • Green Day
  • Simply Red
  • Blue Oyster Cult
  • The White Stripes
  • The Moody Blues
  • Maroon 5

I’ve got a playlist for you with a song from each of these. What other bands or artists can you think of that have colors in their name? I’d love to see your list.

Wait! I almost forgot!

There’s more to today’s post.  We have a small matter of business to finish up.  Last week was Battle of the Bands, and the song was “Colour My World”  I had not heard this particular song before, so it was like going in with a clean slate. I was really hoping to find a cover of Chicago’s “Colour My World” but couldn’t find a decent challenger. Perhaps one day…

The battle was back and forth at first, which gave me a lot of hope that this was a good battle, but it quickly turned into a one man (or woman in this case) show.

Final Results:
 Petula Clark with 8 votes
Priscilla Queen of the Desert with 3 votes

Thank you everyone that took a moment to cast your votes! I am thinking of returning to the the twice a month battles as many of my cohorts are doing, but I’m still not sure. What are your thoughts? Should I?… or should I stick with just one battle on the 15th of each month?  Do you have an opinion on this?

And while I’ve got you thinking, and since I love a good challenge… I’ve got another multi-part question for you, my readers and followers.  It’s nearing time for the annual A to Z Blogging Challenge.  My question is this:

A) what music theme would you like to see me write about?
previous themes have been:
  • A-Z Earworms
  • A-Z Women in Music
  • A-Z 70's Billboard Hits

and

1B) Should I follow the 6 day a week format used in the challenge
2B) once a week with a post covering all letters for that week
3B) two posts a week covering the letters for the designated time period?

I am open to any and all suggestions.

Not a bad Battle, really. I always say that as long as it ends within a 5-vote differential, it's not a blowout. Once it hits 6 votes between the winner and loser, in my opinion, there's no escaping the fact that it was simply not competitive at all.

As for artists with colors in their names, how about THE BLUES BROTHERS and NORMAN GREENBAUM?

As for BOTB, I'm thinking "the mo' Battles the mo' bettah". But that's really a Time & Inspiration kind of question. Do ya have the T & I for two-a-month Battles? I didn't for awhile, but I do again now.

To be honest, I don't have a dog in the fight when it comes to A TO Z. But an idea did spontaneously combust in my mind when I read your Q...

How about A TO Z SONGS ABOUT PLACES. For some examples:

April In Paris (Could be used for A or P.)

It Happened In Monterey (Could be used for I or M.)

I Left My Heart In San Francisco (I or S.)

Philadelphia Freedom (P or... well, I guess just P.)

Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict (The letter C. ...Hey, a "Cave" is a place!)

    1. Hey there Mr Stephen!

Blues Brothers and Norman Greenbaum would be excellent candidates for this list!

More battles... I got lots of T&A oops T&I. And a list already flowing with ideas for more battles.

I like your suggestion for the AtoZ theme. I'm keeping a spreadsheet/list so I can look over all the suggestions to see what would work best.

Thanks for your input! Mucho appreciato!

  2. Mary,

Did anyone on Facebook throw Yellow Card in the hat? This is the only one that comes to mind before I have my second cup of coffee. :)

The A to Z Challenge, I say do whatever grooves ya! I like the idea of Earworms and Stephen has a fantastic idea of doubling your posting ability by song title. I sorta thought about this approach with my art this year, except when sketching an image isolate elements that will fit multiple letters. This might free up our time a bit more but it might make things more challenging in prep. lol

I' enjoying your "Bands with Colors in their Name". Deep Purple "Smoke on the Water" totally rocks! There's nothing like those good ole 70s tunes! I'm gonna keep your playlist going while I do a few things. Thanks for dancing with me today, my friend. Have a colorful day! ;)

    1. Hey there Cathy!

YellowCard wasnt on the Facebook game, as it was only songs with colors in the title. But it certainly fits the bill for today's post! I did Earworms my first year doing AtoZ, but have kicked around the idea in my head to do it again.

Love those 70s! Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Girl! You and I are on the same wavelength! I was thinking about Bands with Color Names over the weekend! I came up with a bunch and I'll throw one out here (I might do it as a Freebie one of these days): How about Blues Image or Black Crows or Golden Earring or Simply Red?? This is so fun with the colors! I am finally back to the 4M and just posted my Freebie (color) post.

Loved your battle and glad Petula Clark won!

As for BOTB, I'm sticking with a once a month post. I just don't have time to do 2 battles a month.
As for A-Z: I'm planning on doing mine as A-Z One Hit Wonders of the 70s (that was my plan for last year but I didn't end up participating although I am pretty much done with my A-Z list at this point so I think I'll be joining the fun this year).
They're all good ideas. I like A-Z Earworms. That's really unique and creative.
As for how to post: depends on your time. I know when we do daily posts 6x/week, it's absolutely draining. I kinda like how you presented it with posting once a week using all the letters for that week. I might do that! Posting everyday is just damn tough! I don't know how John from the Sound of One Hand Typing does it! (Love that guy!) :)

I gotta run. Have some medical crap to deal with this morning.

    1. HaHa! that wavelength is pretty strong! Haven't heard of Blues Image, I'm going to have to check them out - the others were on my list, some made the top 10 that sprang to mind and got posted, and some just made it to a list for another day.

The battle was fun, and I'm glad that it turned out the way that it did. AtoZ - I'm just trying to figure out a way to avoid burnout. It seems that every year by the end of the month, I'm completely drained - even when all the posts are written before the challenge. That's why I have been brainstorming ways to participate but not be wiped out by end of month.

I'll be by your post in a bit. Hope all is well. It's good to have you back in the playground again.

    2. Thanks Mary!
You know Blues Image, I'm sure. They had the one-hit-wonder Ride Captain Ride (It's one of my favorites that will be in my A-Z). You'll recognize it as soon as the first notes start:

    3. Ah.... All I had to do was see the name of the song and I heard it in my head! I guess it was one of those that I just didn't know the name of the artist. See... I learn stuff every day :)

  4. That is really interesting. Does one of of my favorites-Blues Traveler make the list or the group Living Colour make your list. The Black Crowes??? The Average White Band or the singer Pink???

Great brainstorm activity. Thanks and I love some Pink Floyd in the morning.

    1. HI Patrick!

Love the groups that you mentioned! Blues Traveler came to my mind after I had completed my list of 10, but it's a good one. And who doesn't love Pink? Actually, all that you mentioned are good!

Thanks for the input. See you around the blogosphere.

  5. Fun! Last week must have been an amazing theme because so many of us have continued in one way or another. I guess colors bring about specific emotions in people so they are good for musical pieces and bands. Fun batch of songs!

I love colors. They add so much flair to the day. It's good to see the theme extended on throughout the weeks.

  6. Hooray for Petula!

As to your A to Z inquiry, the way I see it is that 6 days a week is the real challenge. One post with 6 entries is sort of a cheat--it's the easy way out for those who aren't willing to invest in the real challenge.

I think Stephen's idea about song places is kind of neat.

    1. Hey there, Lee!

I thought you might say that about the AtoZ. The 6 days a week is quite draining, even when posts are prewritten. It seems that many people drop their quantity of posts significantly after the challenge has completed, and quite a few disappear completely. This is what I'm trying to avoid. The first year after the challenge was over, I cut my posts to three per week, after the second year - I was down to 2 posts per week. Last year, I dropped to one post per week. I wouldn't want to be disqualified from the challenge, but also trying to keep a portion of my sanity. Hope you understand.

  7. Another good selection of great tunes that are about colors (or close enough). I did a lot of this a couple of years ago, and think maybe I'll get back to it.

  10. One band that is think has been overlooked in the colour band’s challenge is the Native American band “Redbone”. They have a great catchy tune called “Come and Get Your Love”.

    1. Hey there Darren!

I have heard of Redbone before. I've even done a post about them in the past. They were on my list of color-named bands, but since I whittled the list down to 10, they didn't make the cut this time. Perhaps they'll make it onto the next one.

  12. I'm personally not a fan of the A to Z posts in a single session. Maybe break it up over several months with a different theme in between. :) 🎵

    1. The problem with spreading out the A to Z posts over several months.... Oh, Look! Squirrel!

Mixing in additional themes in between would only complicate it more.

  13. Wow, not much love for Priscilla. ~grin~ I'd say go with your heart on the number of challenges. You'll know what seems right, I think, and not take up too much of your time, our most precious commodity. I adore all those "colorful" bands except the last. They sound like auto-tuned fluff to me. In fact, it's ironic how bands with numbers in the name seem not to appeal to me, like Twenty-One Pilots. Ugh...

    1. You don't like bands with numbers in them? Ah well.. Can't please everyone :) As for the challenges, I'll figure it out. Was just looking for some input.

  14. Great win for Petulia and also my choice. ☺ King Crimson and Redbone are the only other bands I can think of that haven't already been mentioned (or, have they?). As for the AtoZ, you should do whatever pleases you the most. For the first time since 2014, I'll be sitting this one out. Just can't commit to it this year.

    1. Hi Debbie!

I hadn't thought of King Crimson, but Redbone has been mentioned a few times. The jury is still out for me with A to Z. I have something in mind, but am super curious about my readers are interested in. As for the timing of the posts, I'm going to sit on that decision for a little bit longer and think about it. I just don't want to deal with the burnout, and I don't want the blog to become monotonous and seem as though I just phoned it in this year.
      As always, appreciate your input!
