#AtoZChallenge #BOTB 1970's Billboard Hits - M is for...
Today is a double-hitter. We’ve got the #AtoZchallenge, as well as a Battle of the Bands.
Let’s start with the #AtoZchallenge
M is for... "My Sharona"
"My Sharona" is the debut single by the Knack. The song was written by Berton Averre and Doug Fieger, and released in 1979 from their album Get the Knack. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart where it remained for 6 weeks, and was number one on Billboard's 1979 Top Pop Singles year-end chart.
And now on to the battle ~
How the battle works: Twice a month, on or about the 1st and the 15th, various bloggers get post a battle on their blogs. Each battle is different, so you’ll want to be sure to visit the bloggers that are participating in the battles. You can find a list of participants here (I try to keep it up to date) On or about the 7th and 21st of each month, the winners of the battles are announced.
I found two pretty good contenders for today’s battle. In keeping with the AtoZ theme, I am using today’s song, My Sharona.
Please listen to the contenders and vote for your favorite in the comments. I’d love to know your thoughts on this song and the contestants.
First up, we have Contestant #1: Void
Next up, Contestant #2: Eldritch
If you’d like your blog to be part of this year-round bi-monthly Battle of the Bands BlogHop, let me know, and I’ll help direct you to the guy in charge. Don’t forget to visit the other battles taking place today.
Be sure to follow the 2017 AtoZ Challenge playlist for all of the songs featured in this years challenge.
Did you listen to any of these tunes in the 70's? Would you like to know more about these artists in future posts? Let me know in the comments.
What does tomorrow bring?
Tomorrow brings us the letter 'N'. Any guesses as to which Billboard Hits from the 70s will be showcased?
Yes. I rocked. enjoyed the music.

Thanks, Narayana!
DeleteGlad you enjoyed.

I was ridiculously fond of The Knack, and this song in particular (I'm sure that, given my name, you know why). What a fun theme! I look forward to stopping by again.

Hello Sharon!
DeleteGood to see you here. I've been having a great time with this theme, and I've learned quite a bit about the music in the process. Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see you again soon.
~Mary
ALways liked this song, It has such an infectious beat! ☺
ReplyDeleteAs for the battle, I thought Void had some cool guitar licks but I didn't care for the vocals. Eldritch's vocals didn't thrill me either, but I was won over by the metal guitar riffs. Please give my vote to Eldritch.

DeleteFirst vote in the battle :) I had such a difficult time finding worthy contenders, and trying to stay on topic at the same time. I've got your vote counted for Eldritch.
~Mary
The Void seemed pretty close to the original though they had an almost sixties San Francisco sound in a way--at least that's what they reminded me of. Especially the extended instrumental jam toward the end.
ReplyDeleteEldritch gave the song an interesting update. Not too bad, but not as good as the other guys in my opinion. Eldritch really rocked the song though and that was cool.
I vote for The Void.

Thanks, Lee
DeleteI appreciate your input. I think you are right, they both brought a little of their own to the song, and in very different ways. I've got your vote counted for Void.
~Mary
I think I have to go with the original. Nice tunes, all.
ReplyDeletehttp://darlamsands.blogspot.com/
Ha! But the original is not a contender in the battle. If they were, the battle would be a total shutout in their favor.
Delete~Mary
Mary,
ReplyDeleteThe Void played it safe mimicking The Knack pretty closely but I didn't care for their vocals. Eldritch is a bit heavier than what I normally listen to but what really surprised me is I preferred their version of this classic 70s hit over contender #1. After you pick yourself off the floor, you can give my vote to Eldritch. lol Great battle!
Thanks for visiting my #BoTB and Art Sketching Through the Alphabet "M" (Mermaids) post today! Have a good weekend!
My dear friend Cathy,
DeleteYou never cease to amaze me. Thanks for your vote! (I'll give you a week or two to recover and then surprise you again on May 1st)

ReplyDeleteVery clever way of incorporating BOTB into your A2Z theme! Good job, MARY!!
IMO, 'My Sharona' is music to have an epileptic fit to. (And I sincerely apologize to anyone who may mistakenly think I'm making light of epilepsy. It's a real serious thing, and I feel for anyone who suffers from it. I'm just kind of a jerk.)
Well, my vote unequivocally goes to (and, NO, I will NOT change my mind) 'MY BOLOGNA' by Weird Al. 'My Sharona' never sounded better than when in the capable hands o' Al.
Alright, alright. If I simply MUST play fair then I'll vote for ELDRITCH, although they aren't even a pimple on Weird Al's arse.

Yeah, yeah... I know. I should have gone with my original idea. But that song only ranked #40, where as My Sharona ranked #1.
DeleteBesides, this now leaves a slot where I can use my original idea at another date.
I'm not going to think about Weird Al's arse, nor any of his pimples - because if I do, I'll just end up watching youtube vids of pimples and boils and won't get anything done at all! (now who is sick and twisted, hmm?)
~Mary
haha this is so cute I love it! I actually had a good time lol thanks a lot!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jenny!
DeleteGlad that you had a great time here. Hope to see you again soon.
~Mary
Uhmmm N is N' I will always love youuuu. Lol jk. I loved this post! Great start to my day. Hahaha.
ReplyDeleteHey there Mars!
DeleteGood guess, but a little bit off. You'll have to come back on Monday to find out.
~Mary
Void get my vote Mary.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed listening to all though...thank you:)
M is for Maid of Honour
Thanks, Arti!
DeleteI've got your vote counted for Void. Appreciate you stopping by!
~Mary
I do like this song but I didn't like Eldritch's take on it....gave me a headache so I choose The Void which was much more pleasant to my ears:)
ReplyDeleteSorry about the headache, Birgit! hopefully it will go away soon.
DeleteThanks for stopping by!
~Mary
Fun song! I liked the Void's version the best!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mike!
DeleteI think you may have just broken the current tie :) It will be interesting to see how this battle ends.
~Mary
My husband and I both preferred the Void version. The Eldritch one was a bit too hard rock for me. Not that I really even know what hard rock is, lol!
ReplyDeleteHi Tania!
DeleteI'll count that as two votes for Void. Thanks for joining in the fun!
~Mary
I can't remember the last time I heard this song. But I'm about to show my age here, I believe I have this on a 45"..lol. I loved this song along, it was a fun track and the band was tight.
ReplyDeleteHi Jacqueline
DeleteIt had been a minute for me as well. Fun song. Thanks for stopping by!
~Mary
Eldritch wins in a landslide....adding a metal twist along the now famous bass makes "My Sharona" seem fresh and new again.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your vote, Jinzo!
DeleteI like the updated version as well as the older one. Interesting battle so far.
~Mary
Definitely the original! I love visiting your site. :-)
ReplyDeleteI do like the original, but unfortunately, it is not part of the battle.
DeleteThanks for stopping by!
~Mary
Very fun! You can't help but start singing this song in your head as soon as someone mentions the name. I'm pretty sure it will be stuck in my head all night.
ReplyDeleteHi Kristin!
DeleteHope the tune doesn't keep you up all night! Thanks for stopping by!
~Mary
I thought I liked Eldritch until the guy started singing, though "screaming" is probably a better description. Void's sounded a lot like the original, but I'm giving them my vote anyways.
ReplyDeleteThanks, John
DeleteA Vote for Void. Thanks for joining in the fun!
~Mary
I would have to give my vote to Void even though the arrangement sounded somewhat sparse of intstruments and full vocals. I really didn't care for Eldritch's version. It just sounded like they were trying to add too much to a pretty straight forward song.
ReplyDeleteDarren
Thanks, Darren
DeleteVoid won the battle 7-4. Results are posted under AtoZ R posting.
