Hannah Scott
I was recently sent a link to listen to. I was immediately captivated by the piano and how it mixed with the other instruments. A few seconds into the song, the singer begins to sing and her voice accompanied the music so beautifully. The more I listen to this song, the move I'm drawn to it.
The press release that came with the music states:
“This is beautiful.” - Dermot O’Leary, BBC Radio 2
“She can cut it live as well as on record.” - MOJO Magazine
Much of the inspiration behind Hannah Scott’s music can be found in her affinity with Italy. A year living and working in Tuscany in her late teens provided the backdrop to her early work. She subsequently spent nine months travelling back and forth to the hilltop villages of Liguria to record her well-received EP Still Static. Now she has finally found her musical home at Stefano Della Casa’s Hertfordshire-based label and production company, Casa Music - or, as she puts it, her “own little corner of Italy”.
Hannah’s latest release, Hurricanes, sees her collaborate with producer and multi-instrumentalist Stefano, whose influence and direction have been key to her progression both as a songwriter and performer. The single earned her an invitation to record a live session on Dermot O’Leary’s BBC Radio 2 show and has been played by Bob Harris on Radio 2, as well as being chosen by BBC Introducing as their “Track of the Week” for BBC 3 Counties.
Praise for Hannah’s distinctive voice, strong melodies and thought-provoking lyrics has arrived from influential publications such as MOJO, who shortlisted her from hundreds of entries for the final of their New Voice competition and The Guardian, who handpicked her as their New Band of the Day. She can also be heard in Caffè Nero, where she has been “Artist of the Month”, in Costa and in bars and hotel chains around the world.
Her arresting live performances have earned her invitations to open for artists including Seth Lakeman and 10cc and she has performed at renowned venues such as the Union Chapel as well, of course, as playing throughout Italy.
I wanted to know more about the artist, and she was gracious enough to answer my cheesy questions.
1. When did you first start singing (or playing your instrument)?
I've been singing as long as I can remember and started playing piano at 5 and taught myself to play the guitar at 13
2. What was the first song you recall singing (or playing)?
On the piano, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and on the guitar, Hanson's MMMBop (I was a bit of a Hanson fanatic!)
3. Who are your musical inspirations?
Counting Crows, Damien Rice, Sarah McLachlan, Ray Lamontagne
4. What genre of music do you listen to today?
Melodic singer-songwriters, melodic indie music
5. What embarrassing songs might I find on your MP3 player?
Nothing embarrassing there anymore :)
6. Where would you most like to perform?
The Teatro Antico di Taormina, an amphitheatre in Sicily
7. If you weren't a musician, what would you be doing?
Working in wine/tourism in Tuscany, Italy
8. What instruments do you play?
Guitar and piano
9. If you could dabble in another genre of music, what would it be?
Probably classical - I was taught classical piano but it's not cool at 15 so I moved into pop. I'd probably go back to it and learn an orchestral instrument.
10. What other talents do you have?
I speak fluent Italian and French
11. What is your favorite song to belt out at the bar/in the car/for karaoke?
I'm rubbish at karaoke but in the car, maybe a bit of Queen
12. If you could sing a duet with any musician, living or dead, who would it be?
Ryan Adams. I think our voices might sit together quite nicely!
13. What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
I guess it's one of the toughest careers to make a living from.
14. What has been the best advice you have ever been given?
My Dad once told me I had to be like a ball and bounce back after knock-backs. He was certainly right.
Please give Hannah a like and a follow on her social media, it would greatly be appreciated!
