To My Three Little Birds, Every Little Thing Is Gonna Be Alright
This past month marked my return to full-time, breadwinning employment following maternity leave. I thought it was tricky to find balance before, but now have three little ones vying for mommy's attention. The days are long and have the potential to quickly devolve into hectic chaos. In addition to dealing with typical stressors, our family is on an epic quest to destroy debt and build up assets that will enable us to acheive early financial independence. Every day seems best analogized as a juggling performance, in all three rings, simultaneously. In spite of this, the secret to mantaining our family's happiness (and sanity) is a positive, thankful attitude.
I like the idea of routine, but it's difficult to be consistent with everything. One thing that I always do is to sing a couple of songs to my children before bed every night. I even sang them songs over the phone when I was out of town for business. One, perhaps surprising, song in the regular lineup is Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds." I have sang this song to them since they were first born. They sometimes even fill in the chorus with "Ba-da-daaa-da." I love it as a lullaby because it's different, but with a good tune that I am able to sing. Also, the lyrics convey a valuable message:
Rise up this mornin'
Smiled with the risin' sun
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin' sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true
Saying', ("This is my message to you")
Singing' "Don't worry 'bout a thing
'Cause every little thing gonna be alright."
There are stressful days. There are times when I can't play with them or kiss boo-boo's because of work. There are times when they need to be punished for making bad decisions and will sit in time-out crying for me. But whatever worries may be weighing on their minds, I want to encourage them to smile with the rising sun and greet each day with optimism. I want my children to have faith that there is nothing to worry about, because each day will bring new adventures, opportunities, lessons, and memories.
In singing to them, it also brings me a sense of peace. Sure, we may have had a rough morning, dinner, bath time, or struggled to get into bed. Mommy guilt is a powerful force that can drag you down. But looking at the big picture, they are my three little birds and their sweet truth is that our priorities are in the right place. We're doing alright. We're fighting back against our debt and building an awesome future for ourselves. This lullaby gives me hope that with each morning we will remember to be thankful and optimistic, and smile with the rising sun.
